Visit Galveston? (Short Film)

About "Visit Galveston?"

Growing up as a Houstonian, I did not think of the coastal island of Galveston as anything more than a beach. But in the past few years, I began to forge a new relationship with Galveston as a place. In learning more about its ghostly history, I came to a startling realization: through the very act of driving to Galveston, we are driving the island to its destruction. Galveston, like the rest of the Greater Houston region, has been built out to advantage automobiles over everything else. "Visit Galveston?" is a video essay which interrogates how that dependency on cars is slowly killing the island, and how Houston and tourists are complicit in that crime.

This short film was produced during my time as a student in FILM 324: Environmental Filmmaking, an introductory filmmaking course taught by Professor Sindhu Thirumalaisamy at Rice University.
